Doubleday Book Club Complaints and Reviews
False Advertising And Cheating PublicFeb

2010
Doubleday does not count “BookSearch Plus” books towards fulfilling your 4-book commitment or towards any specials like “Order 2 Get $5 off” or “order 2 get one free.”
This fact is not at all obvious. I cannot find anything on their website about this. I can’t even find their membership agreement to see if it is hidden in the fine print.
Worse, they do not disclose when you are ordering that the “BookSearch Plus” books won’t count. They do include a little note on the order page that tells you it is a “BookSearch Plus” book, but no clue what that means.
As a result, members order “BookSearch Plus” books thinking they are qualifying for special offers and fulfilling their 4-book commitment when in fact none of that is true.
I suspect Doubleday intentionally hides this information so they can sell more books and pay out less on their advertised specials.
Has anyone else had problems with “BookSearch Plus” books?
P.S. Here is how Doubleday Customer Service explains all this in an email to me after I inquired why I wasn’t getting the advertised credits: BookSearch Plus is an additional service available to our members. The books offered through BookSearch Plus are not selected by our club editors and are not offered to members as club books. Please note some of the differences you may encounter when placing an on-line order containing a combination of club items and BookSearch Plus items.
1) If your book club operates with a dividend or an incentive program that earns points for the purchase of an item at club price, the BookSearch Plus items purchased on the web site will not be included in this program.
2) Any BookSearch Plus items purchased on the book club web site will not count toward your book club commitment.
3) If the book club is running a special promotion that you wish to take advantage of by placing an order on-line, BookSearch PLUS items will not be included in the on-line promotion or sale that the book club web site is hosting during that time period.
Suggestion #2
Are you serious? You actually had problems with these book clubs? HOW? Not to be disrespectful here, but I’m a member of several of their book clubs, and have NEVER once had a problem with things not being “clear”. Booksearch Plus I found is clearly labeled under their help section, and if you search for an item, it comes up above the search results as Booksearch Plus and even has a little link for you to click on for details about Booksearch Plus. And if that’s not enough, if you do happen to choose a booksearch plus item, it’s listed in your shopping cart as booksearch plus. If you are trying to place an order using a special offer, all you have to do is click on the offer to get the details and it tells you right there that booksearch plus items don’t count towards the offer.
Are you wanting this company to hold your hand while you shop? I’m sorry, but I have issues with people who instead of taking blame for their own mistakes, have to place blame on someone else, who has made it perfectly clear in a few different locations, what you are buying and getting yourself into. If you can not read, why blame a company, and why order books anyway?
